Unidentified Egret Sources in the Galaxy

چکیده

Identifying γ-ray sources in the Galaxy is hampered by their poor localization, source confusion, and the large variety of potential emitters. Neutron stars and their environment offer various ways to power γ-ray sources: pulsed emission from the open magnetosphere and unpulsed γ rays from the wind nebula and from the cosmic rays accelerated in the supernova remnant. While the latter still awaits confirmation, new candidate associations bring forward the importance of 10 yr old pulsars as GeV sources, with a diversity that will help constrain the acceleration mechanisms near the pulsar and in the wind. Theoretical interest in the γ-ray activity of X-ray binaries and micro-quasars has also been revived by the emergence of a subset of variable sources in the inner Galaxy and another one in the halo.

First gamma-rays from galaxy clusters. Preliminary evidence of the association of galaxy clusters with EGRET unidentified gamma-ray sources

The vast majority of the celestial gamma-ray sources detected so far have not yet been identified with secure counterparts at other wavelenghts. Here we report the preliminary evidence of a probable association between galaxy clusters and unidentified gamma-ray sources of high galactic latitude (|b| > 20 deg) in the Third EGRET catalog. All of the clusters which are most probably associated wit...

Strong Correlation between the High-latitude Steady Unidentified Gamma-ray Sources and Possibly Merging Clusters of Galaxies

We report an evidence for the first time that merging clusters of galaxies are a promising candidate for the origin of high galactic-latitude, steady unidentified EGRET gamma-ray sources. We made a matched-filter survey of galaxy clusters over 4◦×4◦ areas around seven steady unidentified EGRET sources at |b|> 45 together with a 100 ⊓⊔◦ area near the South Galactic Pole as a control field. In to...

Positional Coincidence between the High-latitude Steady Unidentified Gamma-ray Sources and Possibly Merging Clusters of Galaxies

We report an evidence for the first time that merging clusters of galaxies are a promising candidate for the origin of high galactic-latitude, steady unidentified EGRET gamma-ray sources. Instead of using past optical catalogs of eye-selected clusters, we made a matched-filter survey of galaxy clusters over 4◦×4◦ areas around seven steady unidentified EGRET sources at |b| > 45 together with a 1...

Diffuse Emission from the Galactic Plane and Unidentified EGRET Sources

Diffuse Galactic gamma-ray emission is produced in interactions of cosmic rays with gas and ambient photon fields and thus provides us with an indirect measurement of cosmic rays in various locations in the Galaxy. The diffuse gamma-ray continuum is more intense than expected both at energies below 200 keV and above 1 GeV. The existing models for the high-energy excess are reviewed in the light...

The primary objective of the study of unidentified EGRET sources with INTEGRAL is to locate with a few arcminute accuracy the hard X-ray / soft γ-ray counterparts within the EGRET error circle or to determine upper limits on their emission in the INTEGRAL energy range. The INTEGRAL Galactic Plane Scan (GPS) and Galactic Centre Deep Exposure (GCDE) data have been analysed and cross–correlated wi...

In this paper we briefly comment on the observational status of the possible physical association between unidentified EGRET sources and supernova remnants (SNRs) in our Galaxy. We draw upon recent results presented in the review by Torres et al. (Physics Reports, 2003), concerning molecular gas in the vicinity of all 19 SNRs found to be positionally coincident with EGRET sources at low Galacti...
